When a product needs a solid metal surface instead of open mesh, a chain plate belt is often the answer. It has trade-offs too.
A Chain Plate / Plate Link Belt is a conveyor made of metal plates fixed to rods and side chains, driven by sprockets. It gives a solid or perforated surface for products that need firm support. Confirm plate pitch, plate thickness, chain pitch, rods, perforation and sprockets. Plate pitch and chain pitch differ.
We are YIYI Mesh Belt (Ningjin Yiyi Mesh Belt Co., Ltd.), a manufacturer of engineered metal conveyor belts for equipment manufacturers, professional distributors and industrial end users, based in Ningjin, Shandong, China. Our manufacturing experience dates back to 1998; the current company was established in 2008. We make Chain Plate / Plate Link Belts in SUS304, SUS316 and mild steel. I am Sunny Ye. The older version of this article listed many industries without explaining when the belt fits. This version does.

How Is a Chain Plate Belt Built?
A chain plate belt has metal plates fixed across the width on rods, with a chain on each side. Sprockets drive the chains, and the plates form a continuous carrying surface. Plates can be solid or perforated, and side walls or flights can be added. Plate, rod, chain and sprocket are designed together.

| Parameter | YIYI reference |
|---|---|
| Material | SUS304 / SUS316 / mild steel |
| Plate pitch | 25.4 / 31.75 / 38.1 / 50.8 / 63.5 mm |
| Plate thickness | 1–2.5 mm |
| Rod | 5 / 6 / 8 / 10 mm |
| Chain pitch | 25.4 / 31.75 / 38.1 / 50.8 / 76.2 mm |
| Perforation | Yes / no |
| Width | 300–4,000 mm or custom |
| Retention | Washer welded / cotter pin |
The plates overlap or hinge at each rod, so the surface stays continuous as the belt turns over the sprockets. How the plates are shaped at the hinge decides how smoothly the belt bends and how easy it is to clean.
Plate pitch and chain pitch are separate values. A plate may span one chain link or more, so the two numbers do not have to be equal. Confusing them is a common error in replacement inquiries.
Sunny's view: If a buyer gives me one "pitch" for a chain plate belt, I ask: plate or chain? The answer changes the belt.
When Does a Chain Plate Belt Fit Better Than Mesh?
A chain plate belt fits when products need a firm, flat surface: small parts that would fall through mesh, heavy or sharp items that would damage wire, products moved in or out of liquid, or lines where flights and side walls hold product. Mesh fits better where airflow matters.

| Need | Chain plate belt | Wire mesh belt |
|---|---|---|
| Small parts that could fall through | Strong fit | Depends on mesh size |
| Heavy or sharp items | Strong fit | Can damage wire |
| Airflow through the product | Limited, even with perforation | Strong fit |
| Drainage | With perforated plates | Strong fit |
| Flights and side walls | Common | Possible on some types |
Applications are confirmed project by project. Tell us what the belt carries, its weight and size, and what happens to it on the line, and we review whether a chain plate belt, a Chain Driven Belt or a mesh belt fits better.
Sunny's view: If your product needs cold air or hot air through it, start with mesh. If it needs a floor, start with plates.
What Are the Limits of a Chain Plate Belt?
Chain plate belts are heavier than mesh belts, have less open area, and have more parts: plates, rods, chains and sprockets that all wear. Hinges and plate overlaps need attention during cleaning. Perforation improves drainage but does not match the airflow of an open mesh. These trade-offs are part of the choice.

- Weight: a heavier belt loads the drive and the frame more.
- Open area: limited, even with perforated plates.
- Wear parts: chains and sprockets wear and need inspection and eventual replacement.
- Cleaning: residue can collect at hinges, plate overlaps and side walls.
- Noise: plate and chain movement can be noisier than mesh.
Weight also matters at installation. A long chain plate belt needs lifting equipment and a planned method for threading it onto the sprockets, so tell us about access in your plant when you order.
None of these limits rule the belt out. They are reasons to choose it for the right job, and to plan inspection of chains and sprockets from the start.
The older version of this article claimed a longer service life and less downtime as general advantages. We do not make that claim. How long a belt lasts depends on load, speed, product, cleaning and maintenance.
Sunny's view: Plan the cleaning before you choose the plate pattern. A pattern that is easy to make is not always easy to wash.
How Are Plate Thickness and Hole Pattern Chosen?
Plate thickness is chosen from the load and span across the width; our references run from 1 to 2.5 mm. Hole diameter, shape, spacing and open ratio are set for each project, from the product size, drainage and cleaning needs. Both are confirmed on the drawing and checked on the trial section.

| Choice | Driven by |
|---|---|
| Plate thickness | Product load, belt width, support spacing |
| Hole diameter and shape | Smallest product size, drainage |
| Hole spacing and open ratio | Drainage versus plate strength |
| Solid plate | Products that must not drain or fall through |
Edges of holes should be clean, without burrs that could catch product or trap residue. Hole finish is part of the plate dimension and appearance checks before packing.
A larger open ratio drains better but weakens the plate. Thicker plates carry more load but add weight. We review the balance for your product and confirm it with you before production.
Sunny's view: Send the smallest product the belt must carry. That number usually decides the hole size.
Which Chain and Sprocket Details Must Be Confirmed?
Confirm chain pitch, chain type and material, how rods attach to the chain, retention by washer welding or cotter pin, and the sprocket tooth count, bore and wear. The chain and sprockets carry the whole load of plates and product, so a mismatch shows as noise, jumping and fast wear.

- Chain pitch: 25.4 / 31.75 / 38.1 / 50.8 / 76.2 mm in our references
- Chain type, roller and material, matched to the plates
- Rod diameter and retention: washer welded or cotter pin
- Sprocket tooth count, bore, keyway and tooth wear
- Equal drive on both sides
Selected chains and sprockets are sourced under our project specifications and finished-product quality requirements, and checked with the belt in final assembly. Our inspection covers plate dimensions, chain relationship, connection quality, welding, assembly and final inspection before packing.
For chain selection in more detail, read how to choose the chain for a chain driven belt.
Sunny's view: Measure chain pitch over ten links and plate pitch over ten plates, separately. Then send both numbers.
What Should You Send to Replace a Chain Plate Belt?
Send the application and machine, the total width and length, plate pitch and chain pitch measured separately, plate thickness, solid or perforated plates with hole size and spacing, rod diameter and retention, any side walls or flights, sprocket details and photos. A drawing or a short sample makes the review much faster.
Checklist
- Application, product, load and machine
- Total width, plate width and length
- Plate pitch over ten plates; chain pitch over ten links
- Plate thickness; solid or perforated; hole size and spacing
- Rod diameter; washer welded or cotter pin
- Side walls, flights or other attachments
- Sprocket tooth count, bore and tooth photos
- Drawing or sample, if available
Photos and basic dimensions support a preliminary quote. A worn belt does not show the original design dimensions, so for a formal order we prepare a drawing for your approval and run trial production and a first article before mass production.
Every belt receives a 100% final inspection before packing, including plate dimensions, chain relationship, connection quality, welding and assembly.
Sunny's view: One photo of the plates from above with a ruler across them answers most of the plate questions at once.
When This Is Not the Right Approach
A chain plate belt is not the right choice when air or heat has to pass through the product, as in most freezing, cooling and baking lines; an open mesh belt fits better there. It is also more than a light, straight transfer line usually needs.
And it is not interchangeable with another chain plate belt by width alone. Plate pitch, chain pitch and sprockets must match the machine.
From Our Engineering Experience
The most common error in chain plate belt inquiries is a single "pitch" that could mean plate pitch or chain pitch. The second is a missing sprocket photo. We ask for both before quoting.
For replacements, a photo of the plates from above, a photo of the chain from the side with a ruler, and a photo of the sprocket teeth are usually enough to start the review.
FAQ
What is a chain plate belt?
A conveyor made of metal plates fixed to rods and side chains, driven by sprockets, giving a solid or perforated surface.
Is plate pitch the same as chain pitch?
No. They are separate values and must both be confirmed.
Which materials are available?
SUS304, SUS316 and mild steel, chosen by the product and environment.
Can the plates be perforated?
Yes. Hole diameter, shape, spacing and open ratio are set for each project.
When is a mesh belt the better choice?
When air or heat must pass through the product, as in most freezing, cooling and baking lines.
Conclusion
A chain plate belt gives a firm surface where mesh will not do. Confirm plate pitch, chain pitch, plate, holes and sprockets on a drawing before ordering.
