The most expensive mistake in a custom belt is the one found after the full length is made. Trial production finds it first.
Trial production and first article approval make a custom belt order reliable because they test the drawing in steel before mass production. A short trial section checks how the drawing was interpreted and how the structure is made; the complete first article is confirmed by the customer.
We are YIYI Mesh Belt (Ningjin Yiyi Mesh Belt Co., Ltd.), a manufacturer of engineered metal conveyor belts for equipment manufacturers, professional distributors and industrial end users, based in Ningjin, Shandong, China. Our manufacturing experience dates back to 1998; the current company was established in 2008. I am Sunny Ye. The older version of this article talked about cost-effective production in general terms. This version explains the step that most protects a custom order.

Why Is a Drawing Not Enough on Its Own?
A drawing describes the belt, but it can be read in more than one way, and some details appear when the belt is made. Pitch tolerances, edge shape and weld position are easier to judge on a real section. Trial production turns the drawing into steel before the full order is committed.

Even a good drawing leaves room for interpretation. A dimension may be measured from a different point; an edge may be drawn simply but built in several ways; a weld position may be implied rather than stated.
| Detail | Why a trial section helps |
|---|---|
| Pitch and spiral pitch | Measured on real parts, over several pitches |
| Edge shape | Seen and compared with the old belt or machine |
| Weld position and finish | Checked for interference and smoothness |
| Fit of parts | Rods, links and plates assembled as they will be |
| Flatness | Checked on an assembled section |
The customer-approved drawing is still the technical basis of the order. Trial production checks that we and the customer read it the same way.
Sunny's view: Most disagreements I have seen in custom orders were not about quality. They were about two people reading one drawing differently.
What Happens During Trial Production?
During trial production we make a short section of the belt with the real material, tools and process. We measure it against the drawing: pitch, wire and rod dimensions, edge, welds, flatness and structural dimensions. If anything differs, we correct the process or clarify the drawing with the customer before going further.

Trial production has three purposes:
- Validate the technical interpretation: did we read the drawing as the customer meant it?
- Validate the manufacturing structure: can this structure be made consistently with our process?
- Detect issues early: find problems before mass production.
The trial section is made with the same material route as the final belt: verified material, in-house drawn wire or rod where applicable, formed and welded parts. That way the trial tells us about the real belt, not a hand-made sample.
We share the trial results with the customer as measurements and photos, with the measuring tool visible. If a value differs from the drawing, we say so, explain why, and agree the correction before the first article is made.
A trial section is not a free sample. Samples are confirmed case by case at the inquiry stage.
Sunny's view: I send trial photos with a ruler or caliper in every shot. The customer should be able to check the numbers, not just look at the belt.
What Is a Complete First Article, and Who Approves It?
A complete first article is the first finished piece made exactly as the order will be made, with every feature on the drawing. We inspect it and send measurements, photos or video to the customer for confirmation. Mass production starts after that approval, so the rest of the order is made to an agreed reference.

The first article closes the loop between drawing and production. What it includes depends on the belt:
| Belt type | Typical first article focus |
|---|---|
| Spiral Freezer Belt | Pitch, edge, welds, turning behaviour where required |
| Self-Stacking Belt | Guard height, stack plate fit, rod gap |
| Trapezoidal Mesh Belt | Pitch, wire diameter, number of spaces, edge |
| Chain Driven / Chain Plate Belt | Chain relationship, plate or mesh dimensions, sprocket matching |
Confirmation may be a signed drawing, a confirmed PI, an email, or photo and video confirmation, depending on the project. Whatever the form, the approval is recorded with the order.
Sunny's view: If you cannot visit, ask for a short video of the first article being measured. It takes us minutes and saves you a trip.
How Is the Rest of the Order Kept the Same?
After approval, mass production follows the approved first article. In-process checks compare parts with that reference during production, and every belt receives a 100% final inspection before packing: pitch, flatness, welding, smooth and rounded weld points, cleanliness, width, length, structural dimensions and appearance.

Consistency across a long order depends on the reference. Once the first article is approved, it becomes the standard the production team checks against.
- In-process QC checks formed parts and assembled sections
- Drawn wire and rod dimensions are checked as material moves through the route
- Final inspection covers every formal belt before packing
- Drum or geometry verification is carried out where the project requires it
The same reference helps repeat orders. When a customer reorders, we start from the approved drawing and records, so the next belt matches the last one.
Read a specification record for reorders (yiyimeshbelts.com).
Sunny's view: For distributors, the approved first article is the real value. It is what makes the tenth order match the first.
When Is Trial Production Most Important?
Trial production matters most for new designs, replacements without an original drawing, spiral and self-stacking belts where geometry decides fit, belts with special edges or welds, and long or repeat orders. In these cases a small error, repeated along the full belt or across many orders, costs far more than the trial.
| Situation | Why the trial matters |
|---|---|
| New design | Nothing has been made to this drawing before |
| Replacement without drawing | The drawing was prepared from a worn belt |
| Spiral or self-stacking belt | Geometry decides fit in the machine |
| Special edges, flights or side guards | More parts, more interfaces |
| Long or repeat orders | Errors repeat along the belt or across orders |
The step adds time at the start, and that time is part of the lead time we confirm for each order. In our experience it saves more time at installation than it costs.
For replacements, read what parameters you need to replace a metal wire belt.
Sunny's view: When a buyer asks me to skip the trial to save a few days, I ask how many days a wrong belt would cost them.
What Should You Prepare So the Trial Goes Smoothly?
Prepare the evidence the drawing depends on: the old belt or a sample, the machine data, photos of edges and drive, and any special requirements. Name one person who can approve the drawing and the first article. Quick, clear approval keeps the trial useful and the project moving.
- Evidence: a sample or section of the old belt, or the original drawing
- Machine data: drum diameter, sprockets, rails, guides, take-up
- Photos: both edges, the carrying surface, the drive, any damage
- Requirements: material, surface treatment, documents your customer needs
- Approver: one person who can confirm the drawing and the first article
When the trial photos arrive, compare them with the old belt or your machine, not just with the drawing. If something looks different, ask straight away. Questions at this stage cost minutes; after mass production they cost much more.
If you are a distributor working for an end user, share the trial photos with them before approving. The person who will install the belt often spots what an office drawing misses, such as an edge detail or a weld position near a guide.
Sunny's view: One approver who answers within a day is worth more than a perfect drawing that waits a week for comments.
When This Is Not the Right Approach
Trial production cannot fix missing information. If drum data, guard height, sprocket details or the edge type are unknown, the trial will just confirm a guess. Send the evidence first.
It is also not a performance test in your machine. A trial section confirms dimensions and structure against the drawing; how the belt runs also depends on installation, tension, the drive and operating conditions.
From Our Engineering Experience
In our custom projects, most corrections happen at the trial stage: a pitch read from a different reference point, an edge built differently from the old belt, a weld position that needed to move. Each was easy to fix on a short section.
We keep the approved drawing and the first article records with the order. When the same customer reorders, the reference is already there.
FAQ
What is trial production for a conveyor belt?
A short section made with the real material and process, measured against the drawing before mass production.
What is a first article?
The first complete piece made exactly as the order will be made, inspected and confirmed by the customer before mass production.
Is a trial section a free sample?
No. Samples are confirmed case by case at the inquiry stage.
Does trial production add to lead time?
It adds time at the start, which is included in the lead time confirmed for each order.
How is approval recorded?
By signed drawing, confirmed PI, email, or photo and video confirmation, depending on the project.
Conclusion
An approved drawing, a trial section and a confirmed first article turn a custom belt order into a checked one. Errors are found while they are cheap.
Planning a custom belt?
