Seafood lines are wet, salty and washed often. An eye link belt is one of the open metal belts buyers review for them.
An Eye Link Belt is an open metal belt made of eye-shaped wire links joined by cross rods, usually driven by roller chains at the edges. Its open structure drains water and lets product be washed or sorted on the belt. Confirm link wire, rod pitch, cross rod, edge, material and drive on the drawing.
We are YIYI Mesh Belt (Ningjin Yiyi Mesh Belt Co., Ltd.), a manufacturer of engineered metal conveyor belts for equipment manufacturers, professional distributors and industrial end users, based in Ningjin, Shandong, China. Our manufacturing experience dates back to 1998; the current company was established in 2008. We make Eye Link Belts in SUS304, SUS316 and mild steel. I am Sunny Ye. This article combines two older posts on eye link belts in seafood processing into one, and corrects what they got wrong.

How Is an Eye Link Belt Built?
Eye-shaped wire links are threaded onto cross rods to form an open, flexible surface. Reinforcement wire can be added for load, and the edges are usually fitted with roller chain or reinforced plates that carry the drive. Flights, grooves and reinforced plates can be added where the line needs them.

| Parameter | YIYI reference |
|---|---|
| Material | Mild steel / SUS304 / SUS316 |
| Rod pitch | 25.4 / 50 / 50.8 / 76.2 mm or custom |
| Eye or link wire | 1.6 / 2 / 2.5 mm |
| Reinforcement wire | 2 / 2.5 mm, single or double |
| Cross rod | 5 / 6 / 8 mm or custom |
| Width | 300–3,000 mm or custom |
| Edge | Roller chain / reinforced plate |
| Accessories | Reinforced plate / groove / flights |
| Surface | Pickling where the project requires it |
These are reference values, not free combinations. Link spacing, wire and rod sizes are confirmed together on the drawing for your machine.
The older versions of this article called the belt "low maintenance" and "resistant to bacteria growth". No metal belt is maintenance-free, and stainless steel does not stop bacteria by itself; hygiene comes from design, cleaning and inspection.
Sunny's view: On an eye link belt, the edge chain usually decides the replacement. Send me a photo of the chain before anything else.
Where Does an Eye Link Belt Fit in a Seafood Line?
Buyers often review an eye link belt for wet, open conveyors in seafood lines: washing, sorting and inspection, draining, blanching or cooking. The open link structure lets water and debris pass through. For spiral freezing, a Spiral Freezer Belt or Self-Stacking Belt is the usual choice instead.

| Stage | Belt to review | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Washing and rinsing | Eye Link Belt, Flat Wire / Honeycomb Belt | Open structure, water passes through |
| Sorting and inspection | Eye Link Belt, Flat Wire / Honeycomb Belt | Product stays visible and stable |
| Draining and dewatering | Eye Link Belt | High open area |
| Blanching or cooking | Eye Link Belt, Balanced Weave Belt | Reviewed with temperature and load |
| IQF spiral freezing | Spiral Freezer Belt or Self-Stacking Belt | Spiral geometry decides the belt |
Applications are confirmed project by project. Product size matters most: small shrimp or pieces may need a closer link pattern or a different belt, while whole fish or larger pieces sit well on an open link.
For freezing seafood, read which metal belt fits shrimp and fish quick freezing.
Sunny's view: Tell me the smallest piece the belt must carry. On an open link belt, that one number often decides the design.
Which Material Suits a Seafood Eye Link Belt?
Seafood lines bring salt, brine, water and frequent washing, so SUS316 is worth reviewing for the belt and the edge chain. SUS304 suits many food lines with milder conditions. Mild steel is for dry industrial use, not wet food lines. Match the chain and sprocket material to the belt so they wear together.

| Condition | Material to review |
|---|---|
| Seafood, brine, salt water, frequent washing | SUS316 |
| General food conveying, mild cleaning | SUS304 |
| Dry industrial conveying | Mild steel may be suitable |
Each incoming material batch is checked against Material Documentation, with spectral and hardness testing, so the grade on the order is the grade in the belt. For the comparison, read SUS304 or SUS316 for a conveyor belt, and for corrosion, why stainless steel belts rust.
Rinse salt off the belt and chain at the end of each run. Salt left overnight is one of the most common causes of staining on seafood belts.
Sunny's view: A SUS316 belt on a carbon steel chain is a common mismatch in wet lines. Ask about the chain material too.
When Do You Need Reinforcement, Flights or Side Plates?
Add reinforcement wire when the load or width makes the links sag or stretch, flights when product must climb an incline or be spaced, and reinforced plates or grooves where the edge or the product needs extra support. Each accessory changes weight, cleaning access and drive load, so review it on the drawing.

- Reinforcement wire (single or double): for heavier loads or wide belts.
- Flights: for inclines, or to hold product in lanes or batches.
- Reinforced plates: for edge strength and a cleaner side line.
- Grooves: to guide or locate product.
More accessories mean more places for residue to collect. Plan the cleaning method with the design: where the spray reaches, how flights are washed, and whether the belt can be lifted or turned for inspection.
Flights are confirmed per project, including height, spacing and how they are fixed to the belt.
Sunny's view: If you add flights, send me the incline angle and the product. Height and spacing follow from those two.
How Is an Eye Link Belt Driven and Tracked?
Most eye link belts are driven by sprockets engaging the roller chains at both edges. Chain pitch, sprocket teeth, the cross rod connection and equal drive on both sides decide whether the belt runs straight. Worn sprockets or uneven chain wear make the belt skew, jump or bend rods.

- Chain pitch and roller, measured over ten links
- Sprocket tooth count, bore and tooth wear
- How cross rods connect to the chain
- Both sprockets fixed in line on the shaft
- Supports and wear strips under the belt
Sprocket matching is part of our checks where applicable, and we supply Drive Sprockets and Related Conveyor Components matched to the belt on a project basis.
For heavy-duty eye link selection, see how to choose an eye link belt for heavy-duty conveying (yiyimeshbelts.com) and why eye link belts break under heavy load (yiyimeshbelts.com).
Sunny's view: When an eye link belt runs to one side, check whether both chains have worn the same amount. Often they have not.
What Should You Send to Replace an Eye Link Belt?
Send the application, total width and length, rod pitch measured over several rods, link and rod wire diameters, reinforcement, edge type with chain pitch, accessories such as flights, sprocket details and photos, and the material if known. A drawing or a short section of the old belt confirms the design.

Checklist
- Application and product, including the smallest piece
- Total width and length
- Rod pitch over ten rods; cross rod diameter
- Link wire diameter; reinforcement wire, single or double
- Edge: roller chain pitch or reinforced plate
- Flights, grooves, side plates
- Sprocket tooth count, bore and tooth photos
- Material, if known
Photos and basic dimensions support a preliminary quote. A worn belt does not show the original design dimensions, so for a formal order we prepare a drawing for your approval, run trial production and a first article, and inspect every belt before packing: wire and rod dimensions, welding, assembly, edge and final inspection.
Sunny's view: A photo of the belt from above with a tape measure across it, and one of the chain from the side, answer most questions at once.
When This Is Not the Right Approach
An eye link belt is not the right choice for every seafood step. Spiral IQF freezers need a Spiral Freezer Belt or a Self-Stacking Belt. Very small products may fall through an open link and suit a closer mesh better. Where a solid surface is needed, a Chain Plate / Plate Link Belt may fit.
It is also too early to confirm production if the edge chain, rod pitch or sprockets are unknown. Send photos first.
From Our Engineering Experience
In our eye link reviews, the questions we ask most are about the edge chain, the rod pitch and the smallest product. Most replacement problems start with one of those three being assumed instead of measured.
For seafood customers, we also ask about the cleaning routine and whether salt or brine stays on the belt, because that decides the grade for both the belt and the chain.
