Most packaging conveyors are plastic or fabric. Metal belts earn their place where containers meet water, heat or cooling.
Metal conveyor belts fit packaging lines where containers or packed products pass through water, heat or cooling: container washing and drying, pasteurising and cooling tunnels after filling, and glass container annealing. Flat Wire / Honeycomb, Balanced Weave, Chain Driven and Chain Plate Belts are commonly reviewed. Temperature suitability is confirmed per project.
We are YIYI Mesh Belt (Ningjin Yiyi Mesh Belt Co., Ltd.), a manufacturer of engineered metal conveyor belts for equipment manufacturers, professional distributors and industrial end users, based in Ningjin, Shandong, China. Our manufacturing experience dates back to 1998; the current company was established in 2008. I am Sunny Ye. The older version of this article claimed metal belts handle "fragile glass and bulky cartons" everywhere in packaging. In practice, metal belts are reviewed for specific packaging steps, and this article explains which.

Which Packaging Steps Use Metal Belts?
Metal belts are reviewed for packaging steps involving water, heat or long cooling: washing and drying cans, jars or bottles; pasteurising or cooling tunnels after filling; and annealing glass containers. Dry handling, labelling and case packing usually use plastic or fabric belts chosen by the equipment builder.

| Step | Why metal is reviewed | Families to review |
|---|---|---|
| Container washing and drying | Constant water, drainage, chemicals | Flat Wire / Honeycomb, Chain Driven |
| Pasteurising and cooling tunnels | Hot water spray, long run time | Flat Wire / Honeycomb, Balanced Weave, Chain Plate |
| Glass container annealing | High temperature, stable support | Balanced Weave; material confirmed per project |
| Dry handling and case packing | Usually not metal | Equipment builder's choice |
We do not publish general temperature limits. Material and temperature suitability are confirmed for each project, from the equipment data and operating conditions.
Sunny's view: If your packaging step has no water, heat or cooling, a metal belt is probably not the answer. Tell me the step and I will say so.
How Do Containers Stay Stable on a Metal Belt?
Containers need a flat, even surface with a pitch fine enough that bases do not catch or tip. Flat wire belts give a flat, open surface; woven belts give closer support; chain plate belts give a solid or perforated surface. Smooth transfers and matched speeds keep containers upright between conveyors.

- Base diameter and shape: decide the pitch and surface
- Weight when filled: decides rod and wire sizes
- Transfers: gap and speed match between belts
- Side guides: clearance to the belt edge
Flatness is part of our 100% final inspection before packing, because an uneven belt tips containers. For chain plate surfaces, read when a chain plate belt fits.
Sunny's view: Send me the smallest container base the line runs. It usually decides the pitch.
What Matters for Container Washing and Drying?
Washing and drying belts need high open area for water and air, materials suited to the cleaning chemicals, and drives that tolerate constant wet conditions. Containers are often carried upside down for draining, so the surface must support rims evenly. Chain and sprocket material should match the belt.

- Open area for spray and drainage
- Support for rims when containers run inverted
- SUS304 or SUS316, by water and chemicals
- Chain and sprocket material matched to the belt
- Access for cleaning the drive and supports
Read metal belts for washing lines for drive and material details that also apply to container washers.
Sunny's view: For inverted containers, send a photo of the rim on the old belt. Rim support is where wear shows first.
What Matters in Pasteurising and Cooling Tunnels?
Tunnels run long, wet and warm, often for many hours. The belt must stay flat over its length, drain spray water, support filled containers and resist the water treatment chemicals. Belt type, material and drive are confirmed with the tunnel builder's data on temperature, spray chemistry and load.

- Filled container weight across the belt width
- Spray water temperature and treatment chemicals
- Tunnel length and number of drive points
- Flatness and tracking over long runs
- Inspection access along the tunnel
We do not publish general temperature limits. Material and temperature suitability are confirmed for each project, from the equipment data and operating conditions.
Long belts make pitch accuracy matter more, because small differences add up over the length. We check pitch and structural dimensions in final inspection.
Sunny's view: In a long tunnel, ask how pitch is controlled along the full belt length, not just on one sample.
What About Glass Container Annealing?
Annealing lehrs carry glass containers through controlled heating and cooling. The belt must stay flat at temperature and support container bases evenly. This is a high-temperature application, so material, wire size and structure are confirmed for each project from the lehr data. We tell you what we can supply before quoting.

Our Balanced Weave Belt references cover SUS304, SUS316 and mild steel, with spiral pitch 2.8–40 mm and widths 200–5,000 mm. High-temperature lehrs may need materials outside these references.
- Send the lehr temperature profile and length
- Send container types, weights and base sizes
- Send old belt details and photos
We review whether the application is within what we can confirm. If it is not, we say so rather than quote a belt we cannot stand behind.
Sunny's view: For high-temperature lines, I would rather say "we need to check" than give you a quick answer that is wrong.
How Do Line Speed and Transfers Affect a Packaging Belt?
Packaging lines run many containers per minute, so small problems repeat quickly. Belt speed, the gap at each transfer, side guide clearance and how containers accumulate decide whether they stay upright. Review transfers and accumulation zones with the equipment builder, and choose pitch and flatness to suit the smallest container.
- Transfers: gap size and speed match between conveyors
- Accumulation: containers pushing against each other add side load
- Side guides: clearance to the belt edge and to containers
- Start and stop: sudden changes can tip tall containers
Transfer and accumulation design belongs to the equipment builder. We make sure the belt pitch, flatness and edges fit what the line needs, and we check flatness and structural dimensions in final inspection.
Sunny's view: If containers tip at one point on the line, film it in slow motion on your phone. The cause is usually visible.
How Should Packaging Line Belts Be Cleaned and Inspected?
Follow the equipment builder's cleaning routine, rinse off water treatment chemicals, and inspect the belt surface, edges and drive at each planned stop. In tunnels and washers, check for scale or residue building up in the mesh, because it reduces drainage and can mark containers.
- Rinse treatment chemicals off the belt and drive
- Remove scale or residue from the mesh
- Check flatness and edges for damage from fallen containers
- Inspect sprockets, drums and supports for wear
- Measure pitch over ten pitches at intervals
Broken glass or dented cans can damage a belt surface. Remove debris promptly and inspect the area where it was found. For a full routine, read how to maintain and repair a metal conveyor belt.
Sunny's view: After a container jam, inspect the belt where it happened. A small dent today becomes a tipping point tomorrow.
What Should You Send for a Packaging Line Belt?
Send the process step, container type, size and filled weight, width and length, temperature and water data, the old belt type with photos of surface, edges and drive, and a drawing if available. Photos support a preliminary quote; a drawing or sample confirms the design before production.
Checklist
- Process step: washing, drying, pasteurising, cooling, annealing
- Containers: type, base size, filled weight, upright or inverted
- Width, length, number of drive points
- Temperature and water treatment data
- Old belt: photos of surface, edges, drive
- Drawing or sample, if available
For formal orders we prepare a drawing for your approval, run trial production and a complete first article, and inspect every belt before packing. Lead time is confirmed for each order.
Sunny's view: Tell me the line speed and container count per minute. It helps me check load and pitch together.
When This Is Not the Right Approach
Metal belts are not the right choice for most dry packaging conveyors such as labelling, case packing or palletising. Plastic or fabric belts chosen by the equipment builder usually suit those better, and we do not supply them.
High-temperature steps may need materials outside our references; we confirm suitability before quoting.
From Our Engineering Experience
For packaging inquiries, our first question is which step the belt serves. Many requests turn out to be for steps where a metal belt is not needed, and we say so.
We do not have a packaging line case we can publish here, so this article explains our review. If you need references, ask us and we will share what we can with the customer's permission.
