Clockwise or counter-clockwise is one question. Answer it wrong and the new belt is built the wrong way round.
Confirm the rotation direction from the freezer, viewed from above and from the infeed, and from the old belt: which edge is inside in the turn, which way plates overlap and the running direction mark. Then confirm stack plate height, shape and the rod-to-plate gap on the old belt or drawing.
We are YIYI Mesh Belt, a metal conveyor belt manufacturer in Ningjin, Dezhou City, Shandong Province, China. Our manufacturing experience dates back to 1998, and we work on a 27,000 m² site with about 280 units of production and supporting equipment, including 9 welding robots. I am Sunny Ye. For every new Self-Stacking Belt I ask one question before anything else: which way does it turn? This article explains how to answer it reliably, and what to confirm about the stack plates at the same time.

Why Does Turning Direction Change How the Belt Is Built?
In a spiral, one edge of the belt is always on the inside of the turn and collapses, while the other stays extended. On a Self-Stacking Belt the plates, links and welds are arranged for that. A belt built for clockwise travel will not stack correctly in a counter-clockwise freezer.

Turning direction is easy to state and easy to get wrong. People describe it from different viewpoints: from above or below, from the infeed or the outfeed, going up or going down the spiral.
| Described as | Can be misread because |
|---|---|
| "Clockwise" | Clockwise from above is counter-clockwise from below |
| "Left-hand / right-hand" | Different makers use the terms differently |
| "Same as the old belt" | True just if the old belt was correct and nobody reversed a section |
That is why we confirm direction with evidence, not a single word. For drum-driven spirals the same question applies; read how to confirm spiral freezer belt direction.
Sunny's view: When a buyer writes "clockwise", I always reply: viewed from above, at the infeed? Then I ask for a photo.
How Do You Read Direction From the Freezer?
Stand at the infeed and look down on the spiral, or use the freezer layout drawing viewed from above. Note whether the belt travels up or down the spiral and whether it turns clockwise or counter-clockwise from that viewpoint. Record both, with a photo from the same position.

Record these three things together
- Viewpoint: from above, standing at the infeed (state it if different).
- Rotation: clockwise or counter-clockwise from that viewpoint.
- Travel: belt going up or down the spiral.
A photo from above showing the infeed is the strongest single piece of evidence. If the freezer layout drawing exists, send it too; it usually shows the direction with an arrow.
If the freezer has two drums or stacks, record each one separately. Paired spirals often turn in opposite directions.
Sunny's view: Take the photo before the old belt is removed. Once the freezer is empty, the direction is much harder to read.
How Do You Read Direction From the Old Belt?
On the old belt, three signs show direction: which edge is collapsed or worn as the inner edge, which way the stack plates overlap, and any running direction mark. Before cutting a sample, mark the running direction and the product side with a marker. Those two marks remove most of the doubt later.

| Sign on the old belt | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Inner edge links more compressed or worn | Which edge runs on the inside of the turn |
| Stack plate overlap direction | Which way plates slide over each other in travel |
| Wear marks on plate faces | Which face meets the tier below or the guides |
| Marked arrow or label | Running direction, if someone marked it |
Look at the plates from the side as well as from above. On many belts the overlap of one plate over the next is easier to see from the edge, and the wear marks on plate faces show which face meets the tier below. If two people read the sample differently, send photos of both readings and we compare them with the freezer photo.
Cut a section that includes both edges and several stack plates. Mark the arrow of travel and write "product side up" on it. Photograph it next to a ruler before sending.
Sunny's view: A marker pen costs nothing. An unmarked sample can cost a week of emails.
Which Stack Plate Details Must Be Confirmed?
Confirm guard height, plate shape and thickness, how plates attach to the rods, the rod-to-stack-plate gap, total width over the plates and carrying width. Our references cover guard heights of 60 to 120 mm and a 1 to 2 mm rod-to-plate gap. Values are confirmed on the approved drawing for your freezer.

| Detail | How to confirm |
|---|---|
| Guard height | Measure from the belt surface to the top of the plate |
| Plate shape and thickness | Photo from the side and a caliper reading |
| Rod-to-plate gap | Feeler gauge or caliper on the sample |
| Total width over plates | Outside to outside, in three places |
| Carrying width | Between the plates |
Measure plates that are not deformed. If some plates are bent, measure them too and note it, because that tells us the belt was overloaded or rubbing and the cause should be reviewed with the replacement. Read what causes side plate deformation.
Our Self-Stacking Belt references: SUS304 or SUS316, spiral pitch 6 / 9 / 13 mm, rod pitch 30 mm, rod diameter 5 mm, guard height 60 / 80 / 90 / 100 / 120 mm, widths 420 / 580 / 640 / 660 / 760 mm, turn ratio 1.6 / 1.7. These are references, not free combinations.
Sunny's view: Measure guard height on several plates. If they differ, some are already deformed, and that is worth knowing.
How Is Direction Confirmed on the Drawing and Trial Section?
We draw the belt with the turning direction, inner edge and plate overlap shown clearly, and you approve that drawing. A trial section is then built and checked for stacking engagement and turning before mass production. If anything on the drawing or trial looks different from your freezer, it is corrected at that stage.

Our formal custom order flow: customer-approved drawing, trial production, a complete first article, approval, mass production, in-process QC, 100% final inspection, packing and shipment. Drum or geometry verification is carried out where the project requires it.
- The drawing shows direction from a stated viewpoint
- The inner edge and plate overlap are labelled
- The trial section is photographed in a turn, with direction marked
- You compare the trial photo with your freezer photo
Read how trial production and first article approval reduce risk.
Sunny's view: Put the trial photo and your freezer photo side by side on screen. If the arrows match, approve; if not, we fix the drawing.
What Should You Send to Confirm Direction and Plates?
Send a photo from above at the infeed with the turning direction noted, the freezer layout drawing if available, a section of the old belt marked with running direction and product side, measurements of guard height and width, and the number of tiers. With these, direction and plates can be confirmed before production.
Checklist
- Photo from above at the infeed; note clockwise or counter-clockwise and up or down
- Freezer layout drawing, if available
- Old belt section: both edges, several plates, arrow and "product side" marked
- Guard height, total width, carrying width
- Number of tiers and drums
- Sprocket or drive photos
Photos and basic dimensions support a preliminary quote. The physical old belt and freezer information are used to confirm the design for a formal order.
For the full selection checklist, read how to select a self-stacking belt.
Sunny's view: If you can send just one thing, send the photo from above at the infeed. It answers the direction question in seconds.
When This Is Not the Right Approach
Do not rely on the old belt alone if it was ever reversed, repaired with sections from another belt, or ran badly. Confirm direction from the freezer as well.
And do not approve a drawing without checking the direction arrow and viewpoint on it. That one check prevents the most expensive mistake in a self-stacking project.
From Our Engineering Experience
For every new Self-Stacking Belt, turning direction is one of the first questions we ask, together with the original sample. In replacement projects we test the sample completely: width over the stack plates, plate height, plate strength and material.
The habit that saves the most time is simple: a marked sample and a photo from above at the infeed, sent together.
FAQ
How do I tell if my self-stacking belt is clockwise?
Look down on the spiral from above at the infeed and note the rotation; state the viewpoint with the answer.
Can I read direction from the old belt?
Yes: the compressed inner edge, the plate overlap and any running mark show direction. Mark the sample before cutting it.
Which stack plate details matter?
Guard height, plate shape and thickness, rod-to-plate gap, total width over plates and carrying width.
What guard heights do you make?
Our references are 60, 80, 90, 100 and 120 mm; the value for your freezer is confirmed on the drawing.
When is direction confirmed?
On the approved drawing, then again on the trial section before mass production.
Conclusion
Confirm turning direction from the freezer and the marked old belt, and stack plate details from measurements, on the drawing and trial section.
Ordering a self-stacking belt?
Send a photo from above at the infeed, the freezer layout and a marked section of the old belt. We confirm direction and plates on a drawing with you.
