Spiral coolers and spiral freezers look alike and often use the same belt family. The conditions inside them are where they differ.
A spiral cooler and a spiral freezer usually use the same belt family, the Spiral Freezer Belt or a Self-Stacking Belt, selected by drum or stack geometry. What changes is the conditions: temperature, moisture and condensation, frost, the product and the cleaning routine. Those decide pitch, material review and surface choices.
We are YIYI Mesh Belt, a metal conveyor belt manufacturer in Ningjin, Dezhou City, Shandong Province, China. Our manufacturing experience dates back to 1998, and we work on a 27,000 m² site with about 280 units of production and supporting equipment, including 9 welding robots. I am Sunny Ye. Buyers often ask whether they need a "cooling belt" or a "freezer belt". In our range, the answer is usually the same family, reviewed for different conditions.

At a Glance
| Belt family | Spiral Freezer Belt on drum-driven spirals; Self-Stacking Belt on self-stacking spirals |
|---|---|
| Same in both | Turn ratio, drum or stack geometry, pitch, edge and drive are selected the same way |
| What changes | Temperature, moisture and condensation, frost, product, cleaning |
| Material | SUS304 or SUS316, reviewed with product and cleaning |
| Boundary | No general temperature limit; suitability confirmed per project |
What Stays the Same Between Coolers and Freezers?
The way the belt is selected stays the same. A drum-driven spiral cooler, like a spiral freezer, needs a belt whose turn ratio, drum geometry, pitch, rod and wire, edge and drive match the machine. A self-stacking cooler needs the right stack geometry. Width and length alone are not enough in either.

| Selection point | Freezer | Cooler |
|---|---|---|
| Belt family | Spiral Freezer Belt / Self-Stacking Belt | Same |
| Turn ratio and drum geometry | Decisive | Decisive |
| Pitch, rod, wire | From product and load | From product and load |
| Edge and drive | From the machine | From the machine |
Our Spiral Freezer Belt references cover turn ratio 1.15 to 2.5 (1.1 for small turning radius), spiral pitch 5–23 mm and widths 300–2,900 mm. Read how to choose a spiral freezer belt.
Sunny's view: If your supplier offers a "cooling belt" that ignores drum diameter, it has not been reviewed for your spiral.
How Does Temperature Change the Review?
Freezers run well below zero; coolers run around ambient or chilled temperatures, sometimes receiving hot product from an oven. The belt material and structure are reviewed for the real temperature range, including hot product at the infeed. We do not publish general temperature limits; suitability is confirmed per project.

- Freezer: low temperature, frost, defrost cycles.
- Cooler after an oven: warm or hot product at the infeed, cooling along the spiral.
- Chiller: moderate cooling, often with high humidity.
Tell us the temperature at the infeed and outfeed, the product temperature when it lands on the belt, and any defrost or wash cycles. Those values decide whether the standard material and structure suit the spiral.
Sunny's view: Tell me the product temperature at the infeed, not just the room temperature. A hot loaf and a cold room are a different job.
Why Do Moisture and Condensation Matter in Coolers?
Coolers and proofers often run humid. Moisture condenses on the belt, carries product residue into joints and, with chlorinated cleaning, increases the chance of staining at welds. Open structure, finished welds and good drainage help. Freezers face frost and ice instead, which add load and need defrost and cleaning plans.

| Condition | What to review |
|---|---|
| Humidity and condensation (coolers, proofers) | Drainage, weld finish, rinsing after cleaning |
| Frost and ice (freezers) | Load between tiers, defrost and cleaning routine |
| Salt or brine in the product | SUS316 review |
| Sticky or sugary product | Open structure, cleaning access |
Pickling or electropolishing can be reviewed where the project requires them. Read why stainless steel belts rust.
Sunny's view: In a humid cooler, ask how often the belt dries completely. If the answer is "never", plan cleaning and material with that in mind.
How Does the Product Change Pitch and Support?
Coolers often carry soft, freshly baked or cooked products that mark easily, while freezers carry products that firm up along the spiral. Soft products need even support and smooth transfers; small pieces need a closer pitch. The product, not the machine name, decides pitch, wire and surface within the selected belt family.

- Bread and buns: soft base when they reach the cooler; even support reduces marking.
- Cakes and pastries: delicate surfaces; smooth transfers matter.
- Cooked meals and portions: moisture and weight; drainage and rod size matter.
- IQF pieces: small size; closer pitch to stop pieces falling through.
For bakery lines, read which metal belt fits each stage of a bakery line.
Sunny's view: Send me a photo of the product at the infeed. A soft roll and a frozen roll need different support.
How Do Cleaning Routines Differ?
Freezers are cleaned after defrost, often on a schedule; coolers and proofers may be washed more often because they run warm and humid with soft products. More frequent wet cleaning makes rinsing, drying and weld finish more important. The cleaning chemical decides whether SUS304 suits or SUS316 should be reviewed.

- Record how often each spiral is washed and with which chemicals
- Rinse chlorinated cleaners off completely
- Let the belt dry or run it dry before long stops
- Inspect welds and inner edge links after cleaning

Sunny's view: Ask the cleaning team which spiral gets washed most. It is often the cooler, not the freezer.
What About Spiral Proofers?
Spiral proofers use the same belt families as coolers and freezers, but run warm and humid so dough can rise. That makes moisture, cleaning and product support the main questions. Dough pieces are soft and can stick or mark, so even support, smooth transfers and an open, cleanable structure matter most.
- Warm, humid air: condensation on the belt; plan rinsing and drying.
- Soft dough: even support and smooth transfers; pans or trays change the support needed.
- Flour and residue: open joints and finished welds make cleaning easier.
- Long run times: a proofer belt may run many hours a day, so wear at the inner edge deserves regular checks.
As with coolers, the belt is selected by the spiral geometry first. Tell us the proofer temperature and humidity, the product and whether it runs on pans, so pitch and surface can be reviewed.
Sunny's view: If your proofer runs pans, send me the pan footprint. It decides the support more than the dough does.
How Does Airflow Affect the Choice?
Coolers and freezers both rely on air moving through the belt and around the product. A more open belt lets more air through; a closer pitch supports small or soft pieces better but adds resistance. The equipment builder designs the airflow; the belt pitch and wire must suit it as well as the product.
| Choice | Effect on airflow | Effect on product |
|---|---|---|
| More open pitch | More air through the belt | Less support for small pieces |
| Closer pitch | More resistance | Better support, fewer marks |
| Heavier wire | Slightly less open area | More load capacity |
Frost in a freezer and condensation in a cooler both reduce open area over a shift, so the clean belt at start-up is not the belt at the end of the day. Cleaning and defrost plans keep airflow closer to design.
If a new belt changes cooling or freezing results, compare its pitch and wire with the old belt and talk to the equipment builder about airflow settings. The belt and the air system work together.
Sunny's view: When a plant says the new belt freezes differently, the first thing I compare is open area. Small pitch changes can matter.
What Should You Send for a Cooler or Freezer Belt?
Send the machine type (drum-driven or self-stacking), drum diameter or stack data, inside radius, width, turning direction, product and load, infeed and outfeed temperatures, humidity, cleaning routine and photos of the old belt and drive. With these, the same selection logic applies to both coolers and freezers.
Checklist
- Machine: drum-driven or self-stacking; builder
- Drum diameter or guard height; inside radius; width; direction
- Product: type, size, weight, temperature at infeed
- Room or air temperature at infeed and outfeed; humidity
- Cleaning routine and chemicals
- Old belt and drive photos, or a sample
For formal orders, we prepare a drawing for your approval, run trial production and a complete first article, and inspect every belt before packing. Drum or geometry verification is carried out where the project requires it.
Sunny's view: Send me data for both spirals if you have a cooler and a freezer on the same line. Matching the belts can simplify spares.
When This Is Not the Right Approach
Do not choose a belt by the word "cooler" or "freezer" on a quotation. Choose it by the machine geometry and the real conditions.
Straight cooling conveyors are a different case; they usually use a Flat Wire / Honeycomb Belt or a Balanced Weave Belt rather than a spiral belt.
From Our Engineering Experience
In our reviews, cooler and freezer belts follow the same route: geometry first, then product, then conditions and cleaning. The difference shows up in the questions about temperature, humidity and wash frequency.
We do not have a cooler project case we can publish here, so this article explains our review.
