What Does Each Stage of a Bakery Line Ask From a Metal Conveyor Belt?

yiyimeshbelt application baking 261003 103

A bakery line uses several different belts. The belt we build for the oven is rarely the belt we build for the spiral cooler or the enrober.

In a bakery line, the belt is chosen stage by stage. Ovens use a belt reviewed for the oven, product and old belt, often a Biscuit Belt or a woven belt. Cooling and freezing spirals use a Spiral Freezer Belt or Self-Stacking Belt. Enrobers usually use a Trapezoidal Mesh Belt.

We are YIYI Mesh Belt (Ningjin Yiyi Mesh Belt Co., Ltd.), a manufacturer of engineered metal conveyor belts for equipment manufacturers, professional distributors and industrial end users, based in Ningjin, Shandong, China. Our manufacturing experience dates back to 1998; the current company was established in 2008. We supply metal belts to bakery equipment builders, distributors and plants. I am Sunny Ye. Here is how I map belt families to the stages of a bakery line.

Where Are Metal Belts Used in a Bakery Line?

Metal belts appear wherever products need open, washable support: proofing, baking, cooling, spiral cooling or freezing, coating and some transfer conveyors. Each stage has different demands on airflow, product support, flatness and drive, so one belt type rarely suits the whole line. Start from the machine at each stage.

The table shows where to start, not a final choice. The machine at each stage, the product and the old belt decide the belt. The older version of this article listed bread, cake, chocolate, biscuit, snack and pastry lines without saying which belt suits which step. Buyers told us that was not useful, so this version works by stage.

Sunny's view: Tell me which machine the belt goes on before you tell me the product. A cooler and an oven running the same bread need different belts.

What Matters Most for an Oven Belt?

An oven belt is reviewed against the oven, not a catalogue. Confirm the oven type, the product, the old belt or drawing, width and length, pitch, wire, rod and edge. Flatness and tracking decide whether products bake evenly and leave the oven cleanly. Selecting a model from its name alone is a common mistake.

Our Biscuit Belt family covers bakery and oven belts, including thin flattened mesh belts. It is a project-specific family: we do not publish a fixed model list, because the belt is confirmed from the actual oven, the old belt where one exists, and the drawing.

What we ask for

  • Oven type and builder, if known
  • Product and how it is loaded
  • Old belt sample or close-up photos with measurements
  • Width, length, pitch, wire and rod details
  • Edge and drive photos
  • Operating conditions you can share

Balanced Weave Belt and Compound Weave Belt are also reviewed for some oven and heavy bakery uses, where a woven structure suits the product and the drive. We review them against the same information.

We do not quote a general working temperature for an oven belt. The safe condition depends on the belt, the load and the oven, so it is part of the project review.

Sunny's view: Old oven belts are usually discoloured and stretched. Send the sample anyway. A worn dimension is not the original design, but the structure is still there to read.

Which Belts Suit Cooling, Proofing and Freezing Spirals?

Spiral proofers, coolers and freezers use a Spiral Freezer Belt on a drum, or a Self-Stacking Belt that builds its own stack. Straight cooling conveyors often use a Flat Wire / Honeycomb Belt or a Balanced Weave Belt. In each case airflow, product support and the machine geometry must be confirmed together.

Spirals are common in bakery plants because they cool, proof or freeze products in a small footprint. The belt choice follows the spiral design.

  • Drum-driven spiral: Spiral Freezer Belt. Turn ratio, drum geometry, pitch, edge and drive are checked first. Read how to choose a spiral freezer belt.
  • Self-stacking spiral: Self-Stacking Belt. Stack geometry, guard height and rod gap decide fit. Read how to select a self-stacking belt.
  • Straight cooler: Flat Wire / Honeycomb Belt or Balanced Weave Belt, chosen by product, airflow and drive.

Bakery products are often soft or delicate at this stage. Even support and smooth transfer points reduce marking, and an open structure lets air reach the base of the product.

Sunny's view: For bread and buns, I ask how soft the base is when it reaches the cooler. That changes the pitch more than anything else.

Which Belt Is Used for Chocolate Coating and Decorating?

Chocolate enrobers usually run a Trapezoidal Mesh Belt. Its formed wire gives a flat carrying surface with a high share of open area, so surplus chocolate drains through and products sit evenly under the curtain. Pitch, wire diameter, space count, edge and drive are confirmed against the enrober and the smallest product.

Chocolate coating application on a metal belt
Coating lines need drainage and even support.

Biscuits, wafers, bars and cakes are often coated or decorated after baking and cooling. The enrober belt has a narrow job: hold products steady under the chocolate, let the surplus drain and hand products cleanly to the cooling tunnel.

Our Trapezoidal Mesh Belt references cover pitch from 4 to 23.8 mm, wire from 1 to 2.8 mm and widths from 76 to 2,352 mm, with single-loop or double-loop edges. We make it on 15 automatic production machines. The full explanation is in how a trapezoidal mesh belt is used in chocolate coating lines.

The cooling tunnel after the enrober is chosen by the equipment builder and may use a different belt type. Tell us the whole line so we review the right belt for each part.

Sunny's view: Send me the smallest product that goes through the enrober. That is usually what sets the pitch.

How Do Material and Cleaning Affect Bakery Belts?

Most bakery belts run well in SUS304, because products are dry and cleaning is mild. SUS316 is reviewed where salt, brine or chlorinated cleaners are used. Whatever the grade, the belt must be easy to clean: open joints, finished welds and a surface that releases crumbs, sugar and fat without trapping them.

Surface and weld finish affect how easily a belt cleans.
ConditionWhat to review
Dry products, mild cleaningSUS304 is the usual starting point
Salted or brined products, chlorinated cleanersSUS316 and rinsing routine
Sticky sugar, glaze or chocolate residueOpen structure, cleaning access, surface finish
Frequent wash-down or strict hygiene auditsPickling or electropolishing where the project requires it

Each incoming material batch is checked against Material Documentation, with spectral and hardness testing. For material choice, read SUS304 or SUS316 for a conveyor belt; for corrosion, read why stainless steel belts rust.

Sunny's view: Sugar left on a belt overnight is harder on cleaning crews than on the steel. Plan cleaning access when you choose the structure.

What Should You Send for a Bakery Belt Quote?

Tell us which machine the belt is for, the product, the width and length, and send the old belt or close-up photos with measurements, plus edge and drive photos. A drawing helps most. Photos support a preliminary review and quote; a physical sample or drawing is used to confirm the final design.

Checklist

  • Line stage and machine type (oven, cooler, spiral, enrober)
  • Product and loading
  • Width, length and carrying width
  • Pitch, wire and rod sizes if known
  • Old belt photos: surface, both edges, joints, damage
  • Drive photos: sprockets or rollers
  • Drawing, if you have one
  • Quantity and destination

From this we prepare a drawing for your approval. Formal custom orders then go through trial production and a complete first article before mass production, and every belt receives a 100% final inspection before packing.

If you are planning a whole line, you can also read how to choose a conveyor belt for baking lines (yiyimeshbelts.com).

Sunny's view: If all you have is a phone and a tape measure, that is enough to start. Send what you have, and I will tell you what else we need.

When This Is Not the Right Approach

Metal belts are not the answer for every bakery conveyor. Some packing, slicing and dough-handling conveyors use plastic or fabric belts chosen by the equipment builder, and we do not supply those. If your machine was designed for another belt type, changing to a metal belt needs the builder's review.

It is also too early to confirm production when the machine type, edge or drive is unknown. Send photos first, and we will review before quoting.

From Our Engineering Experience

In our reviews of bakery projects, we work stage by stage: which machine, which product, which old belt. After that we discuss belt family, structure and material. Buyers who send the whole line layout usually get a clearer answer than those who send one width.

Our core manufacturing, including belt forming, assembly, welding, straightening and inspection, is managed in our own factory, and we draw our own stainless steel wire and round bar. That helps bakery equipment builders and distributors reorder the same belt and get the same result.

FAQ

Which metal belt is used in a bakery oven?

It depends on the oven and the product. We review Biscuit Belt, Balanced Weave Belt and Compound Weave Belt against the oven, the old belt and the drawing.

Which belt is used for spiral cooling of bread?

A drum-driven spiral uses a Spiral Freezer Belt; a self-stacking spiral uses a Self-Stacking Belt. The spiral design decides.

Is SUS304 enough for bakery belts?

In most bakery lines, yes. SUS316 is reviewed where salt, brine or chlorinated cleaners are present.

Do you publish temperature limits for oven belts?

No. The safe working condition depends on the belt, the load and the oven, so we confirm it in the project review.

What should I send for a replacement oven belt?

Old belt sample or close-up photos with measurements, width and length, edge and drive photos, the oven type and the product.

Conclusion

Choose bakery belts stage by stage, from the machine, the product and the old belt. Send photos and measurements, and confirm the design on a drawing.

Planning or replacing a bakery belt?

Tell us the machine, the product and the width, and send photos of the old belt, edges and drive. We review the belt for that stage of your line.
