Why Do We Draw Our Own Stainless Steel Wire and Round Bar?

yiyimeshbelt factory wiredrawingline 261003 105

Most of a metal belt is wire and rod. Who draws that wire, and how it is checked, decides more than any brochure.

We draw our own stainless steel wire and round bar to control the material that goes into our belts: verified incoming steel, consistent wire and rod diameters, and records that link each belt back to its material. Drawing in-house supports all 12 product families, though not every size for every order is drawn in-house.

We are YIYI Mesh Belt, a metal conveyor belt manufacturer in Ningjin, Dezhou City, Shandong Province, China. Our manufacturing experience dates back to 1998, and we work on a 27,000 m² site with about 280 units of production and supporting equipment, including 9 welding robots. I am Sunny Ye. In 2024 we added a stainless steel wire-drawing line and a round-bar drawing line. This article explains why, and what it does and does not mean for your belt.

Why Does Wire Matter So Much in a Belt?

A metal conveyor belt is mostly wire and rod: spirals, crimp wires, cross rods, links. Their grade, diameter and condition decide strength, how the belt forms and welds, how it wears, and whether it corrodes. Controlling wire and rod is controlling most of the belt, which is why we brought drawing in-house.

Our founder, Aries Zhang, puts it simply: finding a good supplier is harder than finding a good customer. Drawing our own wire and rod is how we control the material our customers depend on.

Sunny's view: When buyers compare quotes, I suggest one question: who drew the wire? The answer tells you a lot about control.

What Does Drawing In-House Let Us Control?

Drawing in-house lets us start from verified material, draw it to the diameters our drawings need, check the diameter right after drawing, and keep the record linked to the coil. We are not limited to the sizes a trader has in stock, and we know the history of the wire that goes into each belt.

  1. Incoming stainless steel checked against Material Documentation, with spectral and hardness testing
  2. Drawn to the diameter needed for the belt
  3. Wire diameter checked after drawing
  4. Released to forming with its record

Round bar follows the same logic: drawn and checked for the rods of spiral, side driven, self-stacking, eye link, chain driven and chain plate belts.

Tensile testing is also available to check wire and rod properties. Having the capability does not mean every order includes every test.

Sunny's view: Because the wire is ours, when a buyer asks about a rod in their belt, we can look at where it came from.

How Does It Help Consistency and Repeat Orders?

Consistent wire and rod diameters mean consistent pitch, forming and welding. For repeat orders and spare sections, drawing to the same diameters from verified material helps the new belt match the old one. Diameter checks after drawing catch variation before it reaches the belt, rather than at final inspection.

Spiral wire forming at YIYI Mesh Belt
Drawn wire goes straight to forming.
  • Pitch accuracy: wire diameter affects how spirals form and how pitch builds up.
  • Fit: rod diameter affects fit with links, plates and sprockets.
  • Welding: consistent material welds more consistently.
  • Repeat orders: the same diameters, the same checks, the same result.

For cross rods specifically, read how cold drawing affects spiral freezer belt cross rods; that article explains the effect of drawing on rod properties, while this one explains why we do it ourselves.

Sunny's view: Distributors care about the tenth order more than the first. Controlled wire is one reason the tenth matches.

What Are the Limits of In-House Drawing?

In-house drawing supports all 12 product families, but not every wire size or round component for every order is drawn in-house. Some sizes, materials or components come from specialist suppliers under our specifications and the same incoming checks. The final route depends on the product design, the drawing and the project.

We draw stainless steel wire and round bar in-houseEvery wire in every belt is drawn in-house

Core manufacturing and QC are managed in-houseAll processes are in-house

Selected specialist processes and components, such as some chains, sprockets and surface treatments, are sourced under our project specifications and finished-product quality requirements.

Sunny's view: I prefer to be exact about what we do in-house. Overstating it would make every other claim harder to believe.

Why Did We Add Drawing Lines in 2024?

We added wire drawing and round-bar drawing in 2024 because material control kept coming up with buyers, and because the industry has seen wire sold under the wrong grade. Drawing ourselves, from verified steel, lets us answer material questions with records rather than with a supplier's word.

Our founder Aries Zhang started his career in CNC machining in 1991 and later moved into conveyor belts. His view of quality is simple: quality is what matters most. Adding drawing lines was a practical step towards that: the material decides much of the belt, so we wanted to control it.

  • One stainless steel wire-drawing line
  • One round-bar drawing line
  • Incoming checks before drawing; diameter checks after

We describe this carefully: we draw wire and bar in-house, but not every size or component for every order. That is the honest version, and it is the one we stand behind.

Sunny's view: Aries often says a good supplier is harder to find than a good customer. Drawing our own wire is how we try to be one.

How Does It Support Traceability?

Drawing in-house adds a step we control to the traceability chain: raw material, material verification, drawing and processing, wire and bar dimension checks, product manufacturing, inspection records and finished product. When a question comes up about a belt, we can follow it back to the drawn wire and the incoming coil.

  • Material records: mill Material Documentation and our verification
  • Processing records: drawing and diameter checks
  • Production records: forming, assembly, welding
  • Inspection records: first article and 100% final inspection
  • Order identification

Read what material documentation should come with a belt.

Sunny's view: Keep your order number with the belt. It connects your belt to our records, all the way back to the coil.

What Does In-House Drawing Mean for Buyers?

For buyers, in-house drawing means fewer unknowns: the wire and rods in your belt come from verified material, are drawn to the drawing and checked, and can be traced. It does not change how you specify a belt, but it makes it easier to get answers about material when your customer or auditor asks.

Buyer questionHow in-house drawing helps
Is the grade right?Incoming batch verified before drawing
Will the repeat order match?Same diameters drawn and checked
Where did this rod come from?Records link the rod to the coil
Can you make an unusual diameter?Often, within our drawing capability

For distributors and OEMs, that consistency is often the reason to work directly with a manufacturer. Read OEM or direct supplier for a replacement.

Sunny's view: When a buyer needs a diameter a trader does not stock, drawing it ourselves is often the simplest answer.

How Can You See This for Yourself?

Ask for a factory visit or video tour that starts at the raw material area and the drawing lines, then follows wire to forming, welding and inspection. Ask to see diameter checks after drawing and the record that links a coil to a belt. Seeing the route answers questions faster than any document.

What to ask to see

  • Raw material area and incoming checks
  • Wire-drawing line and round-bar drawing line
  • Diameter check after drawing
  • Forming, welding and inspection
  • How records follow the material

We welcome factory visits and video tours. Read how we manufacture stainless steel conveyor belts for the full route.

Sunny's view: On a video tour, ask the camera to follow one coil from the store to the drawing line. It is the clearest way to see control.

When This Is Not the Right Approach

In-house drawing is not a reason to skip drawing review, trial production or inspection. Good wire in the wrong design still makes the wrong belt.

And it does not make every belt SUS316. Material is chosen for your process; drawing in-house controls whichever grade is chosen.

From Our Engineering Experience

We added wire drawing and round-bar drawing in 2024 because material control kept coming up in buyer conversations, especially after the industry saw wire sold under the wrong grade. Controlling the drawing step lets us answer those questions with records.
