Critical Inspection Points for Eye Link Conveyor Belts Before Shipment

eye link belt yiyi mesh belt

An eye link belt is built from many links and cross rods. Before it ships, every one of those parts should match the approved drawing.

Before shipment, check an Eye Link Belt against the approved drawing: material, link structure, eye and reinforcement wire, cross rod diameter and rod pitch, width and length, edge and accessories, flatness and tracking, welds and rod ends, sprocket fit where applicable, cleanliness and packing. Every formal YIYI belt receives a 100% final inspection.

We are YIYI Mesh Belt, a metal conveyor belt manufacturer in Ningjin, Dezhou City, Shandong Province, China. Our manufacturing experience dates back to 1998, and we work on a 27,000 m² site with about 280 units of production and supporting equipment, including 9 welding robots. I am Sunny Ye. Eye Link Belts carry heavy loads, washing lines and products that need an open structure. Because each belt is built for a project, its inspection is a check against that project drawing, not against a catalogue.

Why Does an Eye Link Belt Need Its Own Inspection Points?

An Eye Link Belt is assembled from many separate links, cross rods, reinforcement wires and edge parts. Each joint is a place where a small difference can add up across the width or along the length. General belt checks still apply, but the structure adds points that a woven belt does not have.

A woven belt is formed from continuous spirals. An Eye Link Belt is built up from parts: eye or link elements, cross rods, reinforcement wire, an edge and, on many projects, accessories. Each part can be right on its own and still sit wrongly in the assembly.

PartWhat can go wrong
Eye or link elementsUneven forming, cracks, twisted links
Cross rodsWrong diameter, bent rods, uneven rod pitch
Reinforcement wireMissing, wrong diameter, single instead of double
EdgeLoose chain or plates, wrong edge type
AccessoriesFlights or plates at the wrong spacing

The general items, such as pitch, flatness, welds, width, length and packing, are covered in what 100% final inspection checks. This article adds the points that belong to the eye link structure.

Sunny's view: When an eye link belt fails early, I look at the joints first. That is where small differences show up.

What Should the Belt Be Checked Against?

Against the approved drawing for the order, not against a catalogue page or a model name. The drawing fixes material, link structure, wire and rod diameters, rod pitch, width, edge, accessories and any special features. For replacements, the old belt sample or its measurements are the reference behind that drawing.

  • Material grade
  • Link structure and eye or link wire diameter
  • Reinforcement wire: diameter, single or double
  • Cross rod diameter and rod pitch
  • Width, length and number of sections
  • Edge type and accessories, with their positions

Eye link belts are described with several pitch-related values, and the names for them differ between suppliers and markets. We keep the labels used on your drawing or old belt rather than converting them to our own, so the inspection measures exactly what you ordered.

Acceptance values are set on the drawing for each project. We do not publish a general tolerance table for this family, because the right values depend on the drive, the load and the machine.

Sunny's view: If your drawing uses a term I do not recognise, I ask rather than guess. A wrong assumption about pitch costs a whole belt.

How Is the Material Confirmed?

Material is confirmed before production, not at the end: wire and rod are checked on arrival, and grades are confirmed against the order, such as mild steel, SUS304 or SUS316. At final inspection, the label, material documentation and the belt itself are matched so the order record is complete.

Our Eye Link Belt references cover mild steel, SUS304 and SUS316. The grade is chosen with the application, then checked at several points:

  • On arrival: wire and rod are checked against the order; a spectrometer and hardness tester are available for material checks.
  • During production: material is kept traceable to the order.
  • At final inspection: label, documentation and belt are matched.

Read what material documentation should come with a belt and magnet test or spectral analysis.

Sunny's view: Tell me at the inquiry which material records you need. It is easier to plan them than to collect them after packing.

Check that the eye or link wire diameter matches the drawing, that links are formed evenly with no cracks or sharp bends, that reinforcement wires are present where specified as single or double, and that every link sits correctly on its cross rods without twisting or gaps.

ItemOur reference rangeHow it is checked

Reinforcement wire2 / 2.5 mm, single or doubleCaliper and visual check of position
Link formingPer drawingVisual check for cracks, sharp bends, uneven eyes
Link seatingPer drawingEvery link on its rods, no twist or gap

Forming is checked on the first article and then during production, so the final inspection is confirming a process that already runs right. A twisted or open link found at the end usually points back to forming or assembly.

Sunny's view: Run a gloved hand across the belt. Twisted links and loose reinforcement are easier to feel than to see.

How Are Cross Rods and Rod Pitch Checked?

Cross rod diameter is measured with a caliper, and rod pitch is measured over several pitches rather than one, at both edges and the centre. Rods should be straight, fully seated and secured at the ends as the drawing specifies. Uneven rod pitch causes poor sprocket engagement and tracking problems.

Rod pitch measured with a digital caliper.
ItemOur reference range
Cross rod5 / 6 / 8 mm or custom
Rod pitch25.4 / 50 / 50.8 / 76.2 mm or custom

Measuring over several pitches shows accumulated error that a single pitch hides. Measuring at both edges and the centre shows whether one side is longer, which later makes the belt track to that side.

Rods are also checked for straightness and for how the ends are secured, whether by welding, heads or the edge chain, as the drawing specifies.

Sunny's view: Measure ten pitches, not one. A small error on one pitch becomes a large one over a metre.

What Should You Check on the Edge and Accessories?

Check that the edge type matches the drawing, roller chain or reinforced plate, that chain links and plates are secured and move freely, and that accessories such as reinforced plates, grooves or flights sit at the specified positions and spacing. Edge and accessory faults often show up first in the machine.

Eye Link Belt with edge and reinforcement
Edge and reinforcement are checked along the full length.
  • Roller chain edge: chain type and pitch match the drive; rollers turn freely; rods are secured in the chain.
  • Reinforced plate edge: plates are complete, secured and aligned.
  • Flights: height and spacing per drawing; square to the belt; securely fixed.
  • Grooves and reinforced plates: position and spacing per drawing.

Accessories are counted and measured along the length, not checked on a sample. A flight that is out of place by one pitch can hit a guard or a transfer in the machine.

Sunny's view: Send a photo of the machine side frame. It shows me what the edge has to clear.

How Are Flatness, Width and Squareness Checked?

Lay the belt section flat and check that it sits evenly without waves, raised links or a twist. Measure width at several points along the length, and check that the belt runs square, with both edges the same length. A belt that is out of square will track to one side.

Pre-shipment measurement of an Eye Link Belt

  • Flatness: no waves, raised links or twist when laid flat
  • Width: measured at several points along the length
  • Squareness: both edges the same length; rods square to the edge
  • Length: total length and section lengths per drawing

Flatness and squareness affect how the belt runs more than any single dimension. Read why a conveyor belt tracks to one side.

Sunny's view: If a new belt tracks to one side, measure both edges. The difference tells you whether it is the belt or the frame.

What About Welds, Rod Ends and Finish?

Where rods or edge parts are welded, welds should be complete, smooth and rounded, with no cracks, spatter or sharp points. Rod ends should be finished so they cannot catch on guards or hands. The belt should be clean, with no loose wire, oil residue or debris left from production.

Welds are checked visually and by touch. A sharp weld point can mark products, catch cleaning cloths or injure a hand during maintenance.

  • Complete welds at every specified point
  • Smooth, rounded weld points; no spatter
  • Finished rod ends
  • No loose wire ends or offcuts
  • Clean surface; pickling where the project specifies it

Where it suits the part, we weld with robots for consistency. Read how robotic welding improves consistency.

Sunny's view: For food lines, ask for weld close-ups in the inspection photos. Weld finish matters for cleaning as much as strength.

When Is Sprocket Matching Checked?

Where the project requires it, the belt is checked on sprockets that match the drive, to confirm that rods and links engage the teeth smoothly without riding up or jumping. This is a matching check, not a running test in your machine. Send the sprocket drawing or tooth count and pitch diameter.

Rod pitch and sprocket must agree. If they do not, the belt jumps teeth, wears rods unevenly or rides up. A matching check before packing catches the mismatch while it can still be corrected.

For the check, send the sprocket drawing, or the tooth count, pitch diameter, bore and keyway. If sprockets are replaced with the belt, read how to replace a sprocket from a drawing and when to replace belt and sprockets together.

Sunny's view: A new belt on worn sprockets will not run like a new belt. Check the teeth before you blame the belt.

Why Does the First Article Matter Before Final Inspection?

Final inspection confirms the finished belt, but problems are cheaper to catch earlier. For formal orders we run trial production and a complete first article, check it against the drawing, and correct the process before mass production. Final inspection then confirms that the full length matches the approved first article.

On an Eye Link Belt, the first article shows whether link forming, rod pitch, edge and accessories come together as drawn. Corrections made at this point apply to the whole order.

Read how trial production and first article confirmation work.

Sunny's view: Ask for first article photos on a new design. It is the easiest moment to change anything.

What Should Packing and Records Include?

Eye Link Belts are packed in wooden crates so links, edges and accessories are protected in transit, with labels that match the order. Agree the records you need at the inquiry stage, such as measurement photos of rod pitch, width and edge, weld photos and packing photos.

  • Measurement photos: rod pitch, width, edge, accessories
  • Close-ups of welds and rod ends
  • Material documentation for the order
  • Packing photos and label

Read how metal conveyor belts are packed for export.

Sunny's view: Keep the inspection photos with your order file. They help the next time you reorder the same belt.

What Should You Check When the Belt Arrives?

Check the crate for transport damage, compare the label with the order, measure rod pitch over ten pitches and width at a few points, check the edge and accessories against the drawing, and photograph anything unusual before installation. Report issues with photos and the order number so they can be traced.

Arrival checklist

  • Crate condition and label
  • Rod pitch over ten pitches, at both edges
  • Width at three or more points
  • Edge type and accessories against the drawing
  • Visual check for bent links or rods from transport
  • Photos of anything unusual, before installation

Comparing your arrival measurements with our inspection photos shows quickly whether anything changed in transit.

Sunny's view: Measure before you install. Once a belt has run, it is much harder to tell what was wrong at delivery.

When This Is Not the Right Approach

Do not accept an Eye Link Belt by width and length alone. Rod pitch, edge and accessories decide whether it runs in your machine.

Do not judge rod pitch from a single link. Measure over several pitches at both edges.

From Our Engineering Experience

In our final inspection, the eye link points that most often need attention are rod pitch consistency across the width, edge parts and accessory spacing. Those are the items we ask buyers to confirm most carefully on the drawing.

We do not have an eye link inspection case we can publish here, so this article explains our checks.

FAQ

Is every Eye Link Belt inspected before shipment?

Yes. Every formal YIYI belt receives a 100% final inspection against the approved drawing before packing.
